International Women's Day 2021 - Choose to Challenge

March 08, 2021

March 8th marks International Women's Day, and this year's theme is "Choose To Challenge"

Bias is holding women back in the workplace - and it’s up to each of us to challenge it. #IWD focuses on helping forge an inclusive world where diversity is valued to creating workplaces where women's careers can thrive.

Women currently make up less than 1 in 10 of the global oil and gas workforce; while in the UKCS women represent only 3.6% of the total offshore workforce.

Additionally, 73% of women experience bias at work - yet less than a third of employees are able to recognise bias when they see it. Whether deliberate or unconscious, bias makes it harder for women to get hired and promoted, and negatively impacts their day-to-day work experiences. By learning to recognise and choosing to challenge bias, we can create a fairer and more inclusive workplace for all.

The AXIS Network

Bilfinger Salamis UK is a member of the AXIS Network, a cross-industry, non-for-profit members’ support network, focused on increasing gender balance in the Aberdeen Energy Industry to support a prosperous and sustainable future across the sector.

Better gender balance makes business more successful. The McKinsey Global Institute (2015) estimated that a scenario in which women achieve complete gender parity with men could increase global output by more than one-quarter relative to a business-as-usual scenario. While analysis of a global survey of 21,980 firms from 91 countries carried out in 2016 indicated that the presence of women on corporate boards and in leadership roles can contribute to company profitability, with a move from no female leaders to 30% representation associated with a 15% increase in net revenue margin.

Through our work with AXIS, we want to work to significantly improve these statistics and make the sector more attractive to the female workforce by:

  • Engaging leaders across all areas of the industry to recognise the benefit of diversity and to drive through cultural change
  • Providing a collaborative learning and personal support environment and access to role models
  • Providing access to mentors to support each other and share industry insights and practical career advice
  • Being a source of best practice gender diversity information and contacts

Let's celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness against bias and take action for equality.
